This is me playing around with the monochromatic luminosity “threshold” effect. You will recognize some of these images from published galleries, though mostly in different form. I have raw (unadulterated) 4×6 prints of these (and others) taped to boards in my workroom that work as inspiration and initial prototypes on composition and grouping, etc. I will be updating and augmenting my “sandbox” pages as my workroom changes over time.
To reiterate the statement on the page for the Monochrome Gallery, even though this is a manifestly digital processing effect, there is actually a technical and philosophical simplicity to it. Each ray of light, captured as a pixel by the camera, is mapped to either black or white, depending on its level of brightness. Other than that high-level bucketing, there is no additional subjective valuation or creative manipulation applied. I think there is an exquisite purity to that, even if there is no real film analogy.
