Monochrome Gallery

The prints in this gallery are pure black-and-white (not a speck of grey to be found). Even though there is a digital-only transformation involved in producing these images, it is one that is relatively simple both conceptually and computationally (wherein pixels either above or below certain thresholds of luminosity are mapped to either black or white). The film photography analog would be using super-duper-high contrast film or paper, or both—though that is, of course, a bit of a reach and a weak rationalization. However, the effect is striking and engaging. In my final defense, the pixels representing the captured light were only adjusted in hue and value (and done so uniformly!), but not otherwise twiddled.

These prints were done at the same time as the June 2014 Gallery, but they are presented here separately due to: (1) the special digital processing involved (and thus the compromise in allegiance to the film photography heritage); and (2) the immediately identifiable and iconic (yet fabulous) landmarks depicted.

Aqua Tower

West face of the Aqua Tower in Chicago (which was not there when I was growing up–the whole tower, that is, not just the west face). And the cosmic pattern in the sky? It was actually present and captured by the camera, even if not visible as such to the naked eye (which was just…
