Thematically, this gallery could be labeled as “decorative and abstract”, though there was no specific conception in developing it initially. These are images that represent places I’ve been in the past few years that have meaning to me. But the specific localities are obscured; telltale icons and signals are avoided. Instead, the ethos of the environs, or of the venues themselves, are captured and accentuated.

Guggenheim Shadows 1
This was shot near the stairway on the third floor of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Buildings that house art are special to me, and this one (as are many) is a work of art in itself. But I make it a policy to avoid presenting obvious pictures of other people’s art in my…
Guggenheim Shadows 2
Companion piece to Guggenheim Shadows 1, this was shot in the same area of the Guggenheim in Bilbao. See below for a little bit of discussion on the evolution of this print. This—which I consider to be the final version of the print—is actually the third state of this particular image. The first state was…
Bilbao Lobby
Bilbao is a great city for architecture. Most overt is the Guggenheim Museum by Frank Gehry, which blazed the trail for many more bold contemporary structures to follow. But those avant-garde expressions are set in a rich townscape of neoclassical and early modernist buildings (with a few gothic edifices sprinkled here and there). The contrasting…
Chicago Skylight
This is the skylight above one of the atriums in the Marshall Field’s building in downtown Chicago. This is a landmark building that Chicagoans fiercely claim as part of their cultural, commercial, and architectural heritage (even though Macy’s owns it now). Thanks to the official “landmark” status, the building has not only retained the existing…
Chicago Street
Downtown Chicago on a warm September night in 2013. Note that the focus “effect” (to project a positive countenance onto it) here was all done in the camera. No unscrupulous post-processing involved. Somehow, the camera in the hands of the auteur is able to perfectly capture the artificis lumina.
New York Aerial
As with Chicago Street, this is another example of the camera as an uncanny extension of the eye and the inner view of the photographer. This captures exactly what I saw and felt flying over New York, on my way to Portugal in May 2014.
Technical Information
These are relatively small prints (approximately six by eight inches, a nice and surprisingly non-standard size), which draws in the viewer and encourages a more intimate interaction. They are framed out to twelve by fifteen inches. Each print is limited to an edition of three.
